Elite Team Thoughts and Observations Don't be afraid to hire people who are brighter than you. Harder done than said. You need a lot of confidence to do this. Hiring someone who will challenge you on every level and may later go on to build a business much more successful than yours is hard. Hire athletic types. They like to win, have energy, and can endure more than others to be successful. Focus hard on a win/win compensation plan: This is also difficult to do right but worth the time and effort. Be generous... but also demanding. Take the time you need. Hiring is critical. Take the time to interview a lot of candidates. Spend a lot of face-to-face time with the candidates on your short list. Do real reference checks. Interviewing a ton of smart people is a great way to learn more about your market. Be demanding. Find people who have ambitious goals, spend time setting milestones, and then hold them accountable. Be honest. You cannot BS a smart person for long. Establish techniques and tests specific to the position you are interviewing for. What is useful for a Machinist is not useful for a manager, and vice versa. Get a second opinion. Have other people in your organization talk with your prospects and listen to what they have to say about them. Don't just put a warm body In there to fill the position. If you get it wrong you will be in for additional difficulties, take the time you need to find the RIGHT person for the slot. |
